Department Overview

Electric Operations ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E’s electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E.This job is subject to collective bargaining.

The General Construction Painter Utility Worker is involved in painting stacks, towers and all other structures and equipment. Additionally this worker will oversee the mixing of paints, sandblasting of surfaces, water blasting canals, erecting and dismantling scaffolds, lining water canals with fiberglass, installing thermal protection, asbestos abatement and high voltage Insulator cleaning.

The Utility Worker- Painter- GC is a General Construction position and individuals must be able to travel and transfer to a new headquarters upon request at any time; throughout the entire PG&E service territory with no guarantees as to how long you will be away from home.

This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

Job Responsibilities

  • Accesses work site to be prepped using ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or other equipment; uses scraper, chisel, sanders, cleaning agents, and rags to clean and prepare surfaces for painting; tapes paper, foil, film or other materials to protect wiring, gauges, or other non-painted items from paint; patches and repairs surfaces prior to painting; operates power tools that include: chipping gun, grinder and buffer, sand blaster, high pressure water washer, stripper, and sander to clean and prepare surfaces for painting; transfers paint from large containers into smaller containers; mixes paint and/or additives to achieve proper color and thickness
  • Uses brushes and rollers of various sizes and types to apply primer, paint, or sealant; operates paint sprayers of various sizes and types to apply primer, paint or sealant; uses line stripping machine to paint parking lot lines
  • Assists in the application and removal of insulation on turbines, boilers, steam lines, fuel oil tanks, etc.
  • Assists in the duties of Painters A and B
  • Working below ground in vaults, penstocks and in confined vessels
  • Communicates with foreman, supervisor, crew members, and other internal Company departments regarding work schedules, job tasks, and emergencies
  • Lifts equipment, paint, tools, supplies, bags of sand, sandblast pots, and materials in and out of vehicle at the start and end of each work day.  Cleans or disposes of tools, equipment, and materials used during the job
  • Responsible for placing lead contaminated material into disposable drums
  • Installs PVC bracing
  • Drives powered industrial equipment
  • Walks the work site to conduct a pre-job site inspection at the start of each job to identify hazards and safety issues; visually observes and physically tests tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) and records findings, walks hazardous materials storage area, looks for safety issues, and handwrites findings of inspections
  • Attends and participates in department, staff, and company-wide meetings; attends and participates in daily, monthly, and quarterly safety tailboard meetings

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED
  • Must have a valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one by first day of employment
  • Ability to work in all types of weather extremes
  • Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to travel and transfer to new headquarters upon request at any time, throughout the entire PG&E service territory with no guarantees as to how long you will be away from home
  • Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds a minimum of one time a day
  • Ability to perform work tasks from ladders, platforms, metal grating, scaffolds and/or ropes
  • Ability to work on exterior of structures up to 450 feet
  • Willingness to work in an underground environment and/or excavation/confined spaces

Desired:

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a manlift/forklift
  • Previous experience painting in an industrial painting environment
  • In an effort to better represent the communities we serve, additional consideration will be given to candidates living within 30 miles of headquarters
  • Graduate from an approved PowerPathway® Program
  • Demonstrated experience with basic hand and power tools used in the commercial construction industry
  • Relevant Hiring Hall/Canus experience
  • Relevant PG&E experience

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors. ​

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the starting hourly rate range for this position is $36.57 to $44.61, subject to collectively bargained wage increases.
