Department Overview
The Data Solutions Architecture Team at Pacific Gas & Electric Company is responsible for driving long-term, enterprise-wide data solutions, target state architecture, and overall excellence with the application of data, analytics and information to critical business challenges and opportunities. This team is chartered to develop the strategy, roadmap, and accompanying standards that will enable better use of data and information and to develop analytics maturity at PG&E.
Position Summary
The Digital Utility runs on data and information. PG&E believes that one of the most critical drivers of our future success depends on our ability to extract insights and information from the data we manage. The Principal Solution Architect fills a critical role in PG&E’s success building the Digital Utility.
The Principal Technical Lead will contribute to the Enterprise Data & Analytics Strategy and Roadmap and will develop innovative, cost-effective approaches to solve business problems through the use of technology and best practices. In this role, you will help to drive continuous improvement and waste elimination in PG&E’s data products and platforms through automation and reference architecture. You will help teams to implement this by contributing to their work. You will develop architectural guidance documents, mentor and train other architects and project team members, and institute and operate practices that will ensure that the strategy is fully understood and provides direction to business and IT activities.

You will be collaborating with other technical leaders and Executive Leadership to define standards and boundaries of how data works and operates for the Enterprise. As a Technical Lead, you will have a supportive manager, collaborative team, and have the ability to be ground breaking, forward thinking, and revolutionize the way PG&E thinks and be a critical role in revolutionizing solutions that are industry changing as we are one of the most advanced Digital Utility.
The Principal Technical Lead will report to the Senior Manager of Data Solutions Architecture in the Data Analytics & Insights department of Information Technology.
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. We would not anticipate that the individual hired into this role would land at or near the top half of the range described below, but the decision will be dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
A reasonable salary range is:
Bay Area : $151,000.00
Bay Area : $257,000.00
&/OR
California : $143,000.00
California : $244,000.00
This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory.
Description
As a Service Reliability Engineer (SRE), you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the operational efficiency, reliability, and safety of our systems and services. Leveraging your expertise in engineering, data analysis, and reliability practices, you will lead initiatives to identify, manage, and mitigate risks that may impact production and safety. The role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, implementation of preventive measures, and continuous improvement efforts to enhance the overall reliability of our operations.
Responsibilities
- Technical Support and Collaboration: Provide applications engineering support to product teams. Collaborate with product teams, support teams, and customers on shared goals, cross-team projects, and new initiatives.
- Continuous Improvement and Standards Development: Strive for continuous improvement in processes and reliability practices. Develop and evolve standards and procedures in response to business and customer needs.
- Lead the way: Show teams how to improve quality and eliminate waste by implementing improvements with them.
- Cost Reduction: Identifies wasteful processes and procedures. Work with teams to streamline and automate tasks according to standards.
- Performance Monitoring and Improvement: Monitor, measure, and enhance the performance and state-awareness of systems. Identify and drive improvements in infrastructure and system reliability, performance, and monitoring.
- Root Cause Analysis and Investigation: Lead investigations into repetitive damage and failure rates, utilizing root cause analysis techniques. Implement corrective and preventive actions based on findings.
- Reliability and Capital Planning: Participate in annual and long-term reliability planning, ensuring alignment with operational objectives. Contribute to the development and execution of life cycle asset management processes.
- Own the Information Architecture and related Technical Architecture for one or more sub-domains of the Data & Information Architecture domain.
- Understand and document the business capabilities needed to deliver on the mission of the Data & Information Architecture Team.
- Ensure that IT and business stakeholders understand and adhere to architectural guidance, standards, policies, and practices for your domains.
- Develop and execute strategies to introduce new capabilities needed, evolve and mature existing capabilities, and retire capabilities at their end of life.
- Develop and maintain architectural guidance documents and artifacts, practices and procedures, and governance to support the above.
- Support technology strategy, planning, and road mapping activities across IT and at the enterprise level.
- Participate in the development of IT strategy and the identification and design of IT architectures to support the business architecture and the business strategies.
- Data Analysis and Predictive Modeling: Perform statistical data analysis. Utilize data insights for capacity planning, demand forecasting, and identifying performance bottlenecks.
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS in Computer Science/ Information Systems, Business, Engineering, etc. or equivalent relevant work experience
- 7 or more years of relevant work experience in Information Technology, Data Management, Business Intelligence, and Analytics
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working directly with line of business stakeholders demonstrating job-related skills.
- Experience with analytics and data management principles such as: data acquisition and modeling, data warehousing, business intelligence, metadata management, master data management, advanced analytics and data science, “big data” techniques, public/hybrid/private cloud data management and analytics services data security, and data and analytics governance.
- Experience with enterprise business architecture principles and industry standard architecture frameworks.
- Ability to achieve a deep understanding of line of business strategies, priorities, needs, and current capabilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively to engage and influence business and IT stakeholders, senior leadership and external partners.
- Customer management and negotiation skills that enable the ability to mediate opposing viewpoints and articulate the advantages of a preferred solution.
- Strong leadership skills in the technology domain and a high level of drive, initiative and assertiveness.
- Familiarity with at least two or more of: Scaled Agile, Scrum development methodology, DevOps/DevSecOps, LEAN, Six Sigma or ITIL practices.
- Experience with any of the following: Data Architecture, Airflow, Jenkins, Palantir Foundry, Data Quality tools, Collibra, MDM, Informatica, Spark, Snowflake, Teradata, SAP Business Warehouse, Business Objects Suite, Tableau, SAS Enterprise Miner, and other database and BI technologies, open-source Hadoop, and related technologies, data access languages such as SQL, SAS, R, Python, Scala, etc.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills across all levels; ability to communicate complex technical concepts to leaders, business sponsors and stakeholders in clear, concise language that inspires confidence and earns trust.
- Experience with UX research, design thinking (DT), or in bringing products to market.
- Experience working in the Utility Industry and a working knowledge of Utility concepts and challenges a plus.
