Department Overview

The Automation Engineering and Specialists Manager oversees the workgroups responsible for the automation engineering, configuration, implementation, and oversight of substation remote terminal units (RTUs) and human machine interfaces (HMIs).  

Position Summary:

The incumbent will oversee the technical advancements and standards for substation automation applications. The Automation Engineering and Specialists Manager drives quality and human performance factors and collaborates widely with project stakeholders while delivering systems on time and in budget for the Operations group.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement Lean concepts to drive activities that meet metrics in safety, cost, delivery, quality, and morale
  • Support multi-year initiatives related to capital build that include ensuring scope, schedule, and spend goals are met
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders including Substation Design Engineering, Test, Protection, Asset Management, Maintenance and Construction, and Project Management via meetings, conference calls and ongoing correspondence. Negotiates deadlines and addresses gaps in the process of delivering the final systems to the Operations and Energy Management System groups.
  • Oversee the management of the Automation Engineering and Specialist work groups responsible for developing automation concepts, standard development, RTU and HMI databases, product evaluation, equipment, and design management associated with substation automation applications
  • Develops, ensures, and implements the ongoing maintenance of Automation quality standards.
  • Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and rewards and recognition.
  • Develop and manage department expense budget and regularly monitor recorded against forecast costs and provide explanation or justification for budget items and/or variances.
  • Support General Rate Case (GRC) and Transmission Operations (TO) rate case activities
  • Manage 6-8 direct reports and 20-25 indirect employees consisting of both ESC represented and non-represented

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields.
  • Eight (8) years minimum in an Engineering capacity including 3 -5 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Prior experience in regulatory rate case preparation and with managing budgets for capital and expense programs.

Desired:

  • Engineering and operational knowledge to effectively develop and manage department functions, especially knowledge of transmission and distribution operations, substations, SCADA, and automation
  • Strategic, visionary thinking and problem-solving ability
  • Excellent interpersonal, influence, negotiation, and collaboration skills.
  • Knowledge of Human Performance Controls and the development of quality standards.
  • Certification and/or detailed knowledge of Lean Six Sigma and Lean process improvement
  • Knowledge of bargaining unit processes and their impact on organizational operations
  • Strong leadership and presentation skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
