Department Overview

The Diablo Canyon Fire Department (DCFD) is an all- risk emergency response organization, responding to a variety of emergencies including fires, hazardous materials releases, medical aids, and technical rescue incidents, as well as supporting monthly surveillance procedures for all fire valves, fire hoses, hose reel stations, fire extinguishers and fire barriers and barrier penetrations. 

Position Summary

Responsible for managing the fire department and maintaining fire department readiness to respond to fire, hazmat, medical and rescue emergencies. Serves as the single point of contact for the station’s fire protection program. Coordinates key fire protection program elements not under his direct control with Engineering Department and Operations Department representatives.

To obtain and maintain employment and unescorted access at DCPP, must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screen, a security background check, psychological screen, computer-based training, and be subject to random drug and alcohol screening. 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is:​

California Minimum: $​137,000
California Maximum: $​232,000

Job Responsibilities

  • The DCPP Fire Chief manages a department of three direct reports and 18-24 on-shift employees.
  • Develops goals and budget and manages an annual multi-million-dollar budget in accordance with the five-year business plan.
  • Oversees the maintenance of emergency response equipment.
  • Oversees the conduct of emergency response training.
  • Oversees and coordinates the implementation of the site fire protection program and ensures the program continually meets all state and federal regulations and company policies.
  • Serves as the Plant Property contact for NEIL and the primary interface for NEIL inspections.
  • Serves as the Plant Fire Protection Program contact for INPO, WANO, and NSOC.
  • Provides facilitative leadership, accountability, discipline, coaching, correction, and technical support to fire protection employees to address safety, behavior, or performance issues for those under his/her supervision. 
  • Responsible for the safety conscious work environment, results, process adherence and overall performance of the fire department.
  • Maintains liaison with local, state, and federal fire agencies concerning fire protection and emergency response.
  • Serves as the lead for site metrics related to the fire protection program. Leads the fire protection alignment meetings with Fire Department, Security and Emergency Services, Engineering and Operations departments.
  • Oversees key responsibilities in the Fukushima Response strategy.
  • Manages the fire department, including the Assistant Chief of Operations, Assistant Chief of Training, an Administrative Specialist, and 18 on-shift represented employees and up to 6 hiring hall on-shift employees under a union special agreement (a department of 22-28 people). 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School or GED-General Educational Development-GED Diploma
  • Experience in fire protection, 8 years 
  • Fire service leadership and supervision experience, 5 years

Desired:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration/Fire Prevention Technology, or related field
  • Master’s degree
  • Certified by the State Fire Marshal as a Chief Officer 
  • Working knowledge of fire, life safety and building codes, NFPA 805 and structural fire fighting
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Possess current American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification 

Facilitative leader - ability to work well with other work groups to establish and maintain a fully compliant and excellent fire protection program
