Department Overview

System Automation Engineering is an integral part of Transmission & Substation Engineering Department at Pacific Gas & Electric Company. System Automation Engineering supports the Company's $1 billion capital investment in substation and transmission line projects. It is responsible for providing automation engineering for routine projects and maintenance/operation support including but not limited to issuing automation requirements, remote terminal unit (RTU) programming, and investigate automation equipment failures within the substations.

Position Summary

As a summer intern, you will be the vital link between the company and widespread interconnection of generation, increase in capacity demand (residential, commercial and industrial) and system reliability improvements in California. Your role will be to work alongside experienced engineers to ensure that the company provides excellent service for these projects. We are looking for motivated, self-driven individuals who enjoy hands-on engineering, have excellent communications skills, high energy, and enjoy working in a team environment.  If this describes you, the System Automation Engineering Department can offer you a challenging and rewarding career.

  • Ensure delivery of high-quality design products on budget and on time.
  • Participate in project walkdown and project meetings.
  • Identify SCADA deficiencies, prepare SCADA topology at a substation and issue Automation requirements.
  • Provide construction drawing reviews.
  • Engage and collaborate with vendors on training.
  • Determine and issue relay settings for integrated station annunciators.
  • Determine and issue IP_DNP addresses for integrated devices on LAN in a substation.
  • Program Remote Terminal Unit (RTU).
  • Troubleshooting automation equipment malfunctions.
  • Assist in supporting new remote access and user authentication applications.
  • Store the latest RTU configuration and point list on approved system of records.
  • Work with and learn from other departments involved in Substations such as Maintenance, Construction, Distribution Planning, Standards, Protection, Automation, etc.
  • This position is a hybrid position and will be required to show up in office at the discretion of the hiring leader. Travel is expected 10% of the time within the PG&E Service Territory.

The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above working with a team of experienced engineers. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Substation Engineering organization through the work they will be performing.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

The hourly rate for a bachelor’s degree ranges from $24.52 to $35.37.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering degree or related discipline at an accredited University.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or obtain one at least 30 days prior to start date.
  • Students must be returning back to school in the Fall of 2025 fulltime.

Desired:

  • EIT or FE certification
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Strong programming skills
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
