Department Overview

These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

The Colusa Generating Station broke ground in the fourth quarter of 2008, with Construction and Commissioning completed in Dec 2010.  The plant is located 90 miles north of Sacramento just east of the interstate 5 corridor.   This state-of-the-art 2 x 1 GE 7FA combined cycle power plant generates 530 MW with the ability to produce another 140 MW, utilizing Duct Burners during peak usage.  The plant was designed using "dry cooling" technology - which uses 97% less water and produces 96% less discharge than a conventional water cooling system.  Compared to older plants, this combined cycle plant will produce 35% less carbon dioxide while providing enough electricity for nearly 400,000 Northern California customers.
