Department Overview 

The Enterprise Health and Safety (EHS) Department develops and implements programs that drive improved safety for our coworkers, contractors, and hometowns. One of the programs is Human Performance. Human Performance (HU) tools slow us down to reduce human errors. When used effectively, these tools can also help ensure essential controls remain in place and do not break down.  

Position Summary: 

The Principal, Safety Program Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and leading enterprise-wide safety programs, with a focus on HU Tools. This role ensures the integration of HU Tools into daily operations to reduce human errors, eliminate serious injuries and fatalities, and drive continuous safety improvements. The role involves coaching, partnering with stakeholders, analyzing trends, and fostering a strong safety culture through engagement and training initiatives. 

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and assigned location based on business needs. 

This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.  

A reasonable salary range is:  

Bay Area Minimum: $ 128,000. 

Bay Area Maximum: $ 218,000. 

&/OR  

California Minimum: $ 122,000. 

California Maximum: $ 207,000.

Safety Program Manager 

Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Leads the advancement of HU program by applying depth and breadth of knowledge of HU tools to address unique and complex situations/issues 

  • Conducts field visits and observations to assess HU tool effectiveness, coaching employees and contract partners on best practices. Works closely with grassroots teams to drive engagement, adoption of HU Tools.  

  • Analyzes trends from near-miss reports and incident data to identify systemic safety risks. Develops targeted solutions and shares best practices to enhance workforce awareness and mitigate risks.  

  • Demonstrates leadership with internal and external stakeholders to support HU goals and objectives, serving as a subject-matter expert for HU program, responding to data requests, leading complex cross-functional problem solving, anticipating issues and developing innovative solutions to sustain safety program governance and oversight 

  • Maintains program documentation including guidance documents, HU marketing materials, and the HU website 

  • Works with cross-functional leads to evaluate, align, and enhance HU program performance including awareness, compliance, and adherence to best in class industry standards 

  • Makes presentations to different levels of the organization as well as communicates HU philosophy, information and operational policies and requirements 

  • Develops and provides HU training suitable for target audience 

  • Leads the development and tracking of program goals and metrics to meet enterprise goals and objectives 

  • Partners with frontline workers, functional areas, and leadership to integrate HU Tools into daily operations.  

  • Collaborates and leads coordination and facilitation of program review sessions with leaders and/or functional groups to review schedule and program effectiveness  

  • Coaches and mentors less experienced employees 

Minimum Education: 

BA/BS or equivalent experience  

Education Desired: 

MA/MS Degree 

Desired License/Certification:

Safety Certification (e.g., CSP, ASP, CHST, CUSP, OSHA-30 hour, etc.) or a safety degree 

Minimum Experience:

9 years of safety and program development/management experience in a construction or utility environment

  • Competency in building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives 

  • Highly effective communication skills 

  • Ability to organize clear and concise presentation points and deliver these in an informative, engaging, and articulate manner  

  • Ability to solve problems, taking into account the strategic and operational perspective 

  • Demonstrated strong customer focus, cross-functional project/program achievements 

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, results orientated environment 

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office to analyze results and produce reports  

  • Good analytical and writing skills 

Note:  May travel at least 50% of the time across the PG&E territory
