Department Overview
Electric Operations ensures the delivery of clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. The Electric Operations Team is responsible for ensuring the electric grid's reliability and resiliency through the ongoing maintenance and operations of PG&E's 100,000 miles of distribution lines and over 18,000 miles of Transmission lines. Position Summary
The System Protection Leadership is responsible for oversight of all aspects the protection systems installed and owned by PG&E. The Incumbents manage the teams that specify, design, and apply protective relay packages for reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems. The System Protection group also provides system support for departments that interface with protection schemes. The Leadership oversees testing procedures and the review and analysis of system disturbance and operations, equipment evaluation, and standard development. The group performs fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, documentation maintenance, and audits of protection equipment. The group is involved in coordination and information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies. They also provide technical consultation and training for system operation and planning issues. The incumbents oversee 24/7 support to operation and maintenance departments. Incumbents develop, implement and execute relay asset strategies to provide a sustainable and reliable protection and control system at PG&E.
Location is flexible within the PG&E Service Territory amongst Oakland General Office, Frenso or Sacramento HQ, please note hiring leader will make final decision of what are appropriate headquarters for the role based on business need.
This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory (Oakland, Fresno, or Sacramento).
Position will require approximately 25-50% of travel time in work schedule.
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
A reasonable salary range is:
Bay Area Minimum:$178,000
Bay Area Maximum:$304,000
OR
California Minimum:$169,000
California Maximum: $289,000
This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.
Job Responsibilities
• Oversees the Large Projects Engineering efforts within PG&E.
• Acts as the Engineering Leader for Transmission Overhead and Undergound Projects within PG&E responsible for ensuring projects are completed within applicable standards and budget.
• Works with team to set strategy for sustainable large projects program and to maintain expected levels of reliability.
• Facilitates the development of new projects, planning and execution and the approval of projects.
• Ensures Project and System support, 24/7 Operational support, and 24/7 Maintenance support by making sure the department has required resources and goals.
• Oversees support for interconnection activities including interfacing with neighboring systems and local and state entities.
• Responsible for ensuring department operations meet regulatory compliance.
• Acts as a Engineering SME for national committees and other external entities.
• Determines most effective department metrics to measure performance against annual or longer term goals and objectives, for time bound projects or ongoing operational work. Provides data for department performance to management and adjusts based on business needs.
• Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and rewards and recognition.
• Develops and manages department budget, regularly monitoring expenses against forecast, providing explanation or justification for budget items and/or variances.
• Supervisory Responsibility- 10-15 direct reports including supervisors, engineers, and support staff.
Qualifications-
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in System Protection or specific to the field of electrical power or equivalent experience.
- 10 years of protection engineering experience including previous supervisory experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- P.E. License, PMP, Lean Six Sigma
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Transmission Engineering or specific to the field of electrical power.
- 10 years of protection transmission engineering experience including previous supervisory experience.
- Experience with bargaining unit employees, Supervisory experience, Substation, Grid Operations, and Transmission, Commissioning experience,
- Project Management experience, Leadership Roles in Industry Committees.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Desired
- Expertise in electrical engineering concepts, theories and practices preferably transmission engineering.
- Depth and breadth of knowledge of electrical circuits, relays and software applications involved in identifying and developing effective protection schemes including fault analysis programs and Mathcad.
- Management skills to lead teams and promote employee engagement.
- Ability to monitor, gather and analyze information, to determine potential impacts, and recommend responses to challenges.
- Able to influence others to achieve understanding, acceptance and commitment to act in support of ideas, programs or causes.
- Understands the national and regional regulatory requirements as they apply to protection engineering.
- Capable of applying negotiation techniques to obtain commitment, compromise, or settlement while promoting mutual interest.
- Knowledge of California and Federal regulatory requirements such as Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), NERC/CIP, WECC, California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), and California Independent System Operator (CAISO.)
- Proficient with MS Professional Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point)
- Strong project management knowledge and skills to effectively lead diverse teams and complex projects.
- Strong technical coaching and mentoring skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of the ESC contract as it applies to protection engineers.
- Significant knowledge of planning, operations and maintenance activities within a utility and the working relationship between these departments.
- Significant knowledge of how protection and control schemes can impact reliability and the solutions thereof.
