Department Overview
Marketing and Communications develops and executes a broad range of strategic external and internal communications initiatives. The team provides counsel to all functional areas and manages PG&E’s marketing and corporate branding programs.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced communications professional to help lead a new era of social media at PG&E. This role will help drive organic content, social listening, engagement, and analytics; partner with Brand on paid strategy; and collaborate closely with Executive Communications. The successful candidate has experience leading social programs in large, matrixed organizations, can articulate and champion best practices, and can confidently uphold a cohesive, multichannel social strategy that strengthens brand trust. This role will help the team to:
- Develop and implement PG&E’s social media guidelines and standards for engaging with our customers and other stakeholders on key social platforms.
- Ensure a consistent brand voice, responsible moderation, and adherence to policies and standards.
- Monitor and respond to comments, direct messages, and questions across PG&E social channels.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to obtain accurate information for responses.
- Measure the impact of community engagement, including sentiment and volume.
- Escalate crisis-related or urgent items to the appropriate teams.
The role is hybrid working from your remote office and in-person at the Oakland General Office 1-2 days per week or based on business needs. Additional travel within the service territory for learning or content capture may be required. This role will also participate in on-call rotation to support the emergency operations center (located in Vacaville, CA) when activated.
Job Responsibilities
Community Engagement & Relationship Building
Lead day-to-day engagement across major and emerging social platforms, fostering authentic, empathetic interactions with customers, community members, creators, and advocates while representing the brand with sound judgment.
Governance, Guidelines & Cross-Functional Partnership
Develop and maintain community guidelines and engagement best practices. Partner with Marketing and Communications, Customer, Energy Delivery, Legal, and other teams to surface feedback, address concerns, and support crisis monitoring and response. Provide strategic communication guidance to internal partners. Serve in an emergency on-call rotation to respond to operational and reputations crises.
Social Listening, Sentiment & Issue Escalation
Monitor conversations, sentiment, and trends related to PG&E, its work, and the broader industry. Identify opportunities for meaningful participation and elevate emerging issues early.
Content Creation & Real‑Time Storytelling
Create and contribute to engaging social content—including shortform video and real-time storytelling—grounded in community insights, user-generated content, and platform culture.
Organic Social Strategy Execution
Support and execute PG&E’s organic social strategy by collaborating with communications, marketing, growth, and product partners to plan, write, schedule, and publish content across platforms.
Platform-Specific Voice & Moderation Judgment
Adapt tone, voice, and engagement style to fit platform norms while ensuring responsible moderation and consistent representation of the brand. Ability to translate complex enterprise topics for diverse external audiences is essential.
Analytics, Reporting & Optimization
Track, analyze, and report on engagement, sentiment, and performance metrics. Use insights from analytics and listening tools to refine strategy, inform editorial decisions, and guide colleagues.
Internal Advocacy, Training & Thought Leadership
Serve as an internal advocate for the brand and the role of social media. Support PG&E’s corporate narrative, advise colleagues on social media best practices, and contribute to training and enablement resources.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field or equivalent work experience
- 10 years of related work experience to include social media in a corporate setting
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Deep knowledge of social media in a corporate setting, online behaviors, and digital trends
- Strong understanding of paid social, influencer marketing, executive social, user-generated, and employee-generated content, and emerging formats
- Experience with social media management tools (e.g., Sprout Social)
- Strong analytical skills and experience with social listening/monitoring platforms (e.g., Quid, Brandwatch, Talkwalker)
- High business acumen, curiosity, and problem-solving mindset
- Excellent interpersonal skills: able to build trust and collaborate across diverse teams
- Excellent writing and editing skills (journalistic or AP style), with strong attention to detail
- Proficiency in social content creation and understanding of content quality
- Strong prioritization and organization skills; ability to balance urgent and non‑urgent work
- Flexibility and ability to pivot quickly
- Ability to write quickly, clearly, and accurately under tight deadlines
- Ability to absorb complex information, identify patterns, and simplify for others
- Experience building social media strategies and programs
- Experience in energy, utilities, infrastructure, or regulated industries
- Fluency in another language, especially Spanish
- Experience creating news style content (images, video, infographics, audio)
- Familiarity with traditional media
- Working knowledge of photo editing software
Compensation
PG&E is providing the full salary/pay range for this position. The actual amount paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, internal equity,specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, and geographic location. The range to reasonably expect will be around the minimum and themidpoint. The final decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to the factors above. This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.
