Department Overview

Traffic design and engineering in traffic control design encompass the comprehensive planning, analysis, and implementation of effective measures to manage and regulate traffic flow, ensuring safety, efficiency, and optimal road infrastructure. The team is responsible for designing safe work zones that intersect with all streets, highways, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and site roadways open to public travel. In addition, the team manages PG&E’s compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Position Summary

Seeking Traffic Control Design Engineer Intern to support Traffic Design Engineering work in support of operations, production, construction and/or maintenance functions within Gas and Electric Operations. Coworkers will identify, diagnose and solve technical problems, ensuring timely, thorough, and accurate completion of traffic control engineering services work and projects. They will prepare new or modified traffic control designs. This role creates and maintains company standards for area of focus; while contributing to Safety Excellence goals by improving safety, reliability and affordability through engineering related work and activities.

Examples of job responsibilities:

  • Performs basic engineering design work and projects.
  • Partners with more experienced Traffic Engineers to develop knowledge.
  • Works under guidance and oversight from more senior staff.  Given detailed directions with regards to work.
  • Creates and/or revises site specific temporary Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) according to the latest California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD), Caltrans, and local agency standards.

Summer intern: M-F, 40 hrs/week

HQ Location (Flexible): San Ramon, Fresno, Oakland, or Sacramento CA

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Traffic Engineering or a related field at an accredited University.
  • Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work location.

Desired:

  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Knowledge of computer-aided design and drafting software (e.g., AutoCAD, RapidPlan) is needed to perform at the job level.
  • Proficiency in the following supplemental programs: Microsoft Word/Excel, Adobe Acrobat/Revu, Google Earth.
  • Competency in building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills. 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction.
  • Traffic control design experience for a utility or major traffic control company.
  • Knowledge of Traffic Control Plan (TCP) implementation concepts, methods, best practices, and techniques in accordance with the California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CAMUTCD), Local Agency, & Caltrans standards and specifications as needed to perform at the job level.
  • Knowledge of applicable engineering principles, codes, regulations, policies and procedures related to the industry and PG&E as needed to perform at the job level.
  • Ability to read and understand construction and/or utility information presented in graphics, maps, schematics, or diagrams as needed to perform at the job level.
  • Engineering in Training (EIT)
  • Knowledge of computer-aided Salesforce and ProjectWise software applications.
