Electric Operations ensures the delivery of clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E’s electric distribution and transmission operations and maintenance, as well as power generation operations. The organization manages over 100,000 circuit miles of electric distribution lines and over 18,000 circuit miles of interconnected transmission lines and operates and maintains hydroelectric, fossil, solar generation, and battery storage facilities.
A critical component of Electric Operations is the planning, design, and maintenance of the electric transmission system. The Transmission Line (T‑Line) Engineering group supports the safe, reliable, and compliant design and operation of overhead transmission lines, structures, and associated infrastructure by applying industry standards, sound engineering judgment, and continuous improvement practices.
Position Summary
Transmission Line Civil Engineering is responsible for the planning, design, and construction support of overhead and underground transmission line projects. The group provides engineering expertise for upgrading, expanding, and replacing transmission infrastructure, including:
- Towers & Poles supporting Overhead transmission lines
- Underground transmission lines
- Foundations for transmission structures
- Technical support for feasibility studies and constructability reviews
- Construction and field support
As a Summer Intern in Transmission Line Civil Engineering, you will assist in the projects supporting California’s growing energy demands, renewable generation interconnections, and system reliability improvements. You will work alongside experienced engineers and gain hands-on exposure to the design and construction of transmission line infrastructure.

This position will assist in the identification and design of transmission structures and other capital investments related to electric transmission. This position works closely with experienced design engineers, project engineers, field construction, and project management with a
developing knowledge of civil engineering. Position contributes toward safety excellence goals by improving safety, reliability, and affordability for PG&E’s steel transmission infrastructure.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of experienced engineers, interns may assist with:
- Civil design of transmission line projects, including structure foundations, tower analysis and repairs
- Analysis and design of reinforced concrete foundations, drilled piers, spread footings, and retaining structures
- Preparation and review of engineering drawings, calculations, and technical documentation
- Field visits to support construction activities and observe transmission line projects
- Prepares and reviews field investigation data and engineering studies in order to support departments decision-making process
- Assists in field work related to investigations, engineering designs, and construction
- Supports evaluation and application of new technology in order to optimize affordability and streamline maintenance requirements
Interns will become familiar with commonly used engineering tools and software such as AutoCAD, PLS Tower, and other civil engineering analysis programs.
This position also provides exposure to other departments involved in transmission projects, including Construction, Maintenance, Asset Strategy, Environmental Services, Land, Standards, and Planning.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, or related major, at an accredited University
- Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship
Desired:
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification
- 3.0 GPA or higher in both cumulative and major coursework
- Previous engineering experience in utilities, construction, municipalities, or consulting
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and support fellow team members
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision
