Department Overview
Electric Transmission & Distribution ensures the delivery of clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. The Electric Transmission & Distribution Team is responsible for ensuring the electric grid's reliability and resiliency through the ongoing maintenance and operations of PG&E's 100,000 miles of distribution lines and over 18,000 miles of Transmission lines. Position Summary
Oversees engineers who develop and monitor PG&E's distribution load forecasting and power flow modeling initiatives, including the annual Distribution Planning Process (DPP). Responsible for managing, supporting, and setting the vision for distribution planning tools.
Position duties may include but are not limited to-
• Leads the Distribution Planning Process to ensure the distribution system is accurately modeled and timely solutions are developed to meet work plan commitments and regulatory deliverables.
• Sets the long-term vision and strategic roadmap for distribution planning tools, aligning investments and capabilities with evolving distribution planning needs and regulatory requirements.
• Manages distribution planning software tools, including new feature development, testing, deployment, and training to support effective system modeling and planning outcomes.
• Oversees JIRA-based ticketing for distribution planning tools, ensuring transparent intake, prioritization, execution tracking, and status reporting through regular operating reviews.
• Supports regulatory filings including the Grid Needs Assessment (GNA).
• Participates in area specific or system-wide initiatives as an independent contributor engineer in addition to leadership responsibilities.
• Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, rewards and recognition.
• Manages represented and non-represented employees.
Location is flexible within the PG&E Service Territory, please note hiring leader will make final decision of what are appropriate headquarters for the role based on business need (San Luis Obispo, San Jose, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Fresno, West Sacramento or Rocklin).
Position will require approximately 10% of travel time in work schedule.
This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory (San Luis Obispo, San Jose, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Fresno, West Sacramento or Rocklin).
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
A reasonable salary range is:
Bay Area Minimum:$159,000
Bay Area Maximum: $271,000
OR
California Minimum:$151,000
California Maximum: $257,000
This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.
Job Responsibilities
• Manages electric distribution planning activities in assigned areas.
• Oversees the processes associated with developing load forecasts, assessing new customer connection requests, assuring adequate distribution protection, developing capacity projects and developing reliability projects.
• Collaborates with Electric Reliability to develop and implement methodologies to ensure optimum solutions that enhance reliability.
• Collaborates with Electric Distribution Operations and Engineering to ensure seamless processes and support for clients.
• Collaborates with stakeholders to develop and implement distribution automation strategy. Works with stakeholder groups involved with implementing specific standards and segments of overall automation strategy.
• Participates in the development of grid needs assessments and distributed generation work.
• Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, rewards and recognition.
Qualifications-
Minimum:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent related experience.
• 8 years electric distribution engineering experience or equivalent.
• 5 years of electric distribution planning experience or equivalent.
Desired:
• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus in power systems.
• Familiarity with distribution planning and data platforms, including CYME, LoadSEER, Teradata, Snowflake, EDGIS, ETGIS, EDPI, and emerging technologies such as multi‑processing, GPUs, and AI/LLMs.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Five (5) years of experience as an Electric Distribution Engineer or equivalent, including, but not limited to distribution capacity planning, forecasting distribution peak demand, distribution reliability engineering, distribution system design, distribution operations engineering, distributed energy resource (DER) development, and grid innovation.
• One (1) year directly leading an engineering team.
