Position Summary
This position supports the typical duties associated with hands-on functions within the telecommunications 2-way radio and network industry and is responsible for providing 7/24 Tier III technical support on radio technologies monitored by the Network Operations Centers and maintained by Regional Technicians. These technologies include but are not limited to 2-way radio, land, mobile, and radio console system infrastructure as well as voice over internet protocol (VOIP) technology. Position headquarters is negotiable within the PG&E service territory.
This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed between the entry point and the middle of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors. This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $45.67 to $68.75.
Responsibilities
Network Management & Operational Support:
- Work safely following Company Safety Standards and Guidelines.
- Responsible for learning all of the systems and applications required to perform the radio Specialist job function.
- Responsible for technical support and administration of critical radio infrastructure components (e.g., mountain top repeaters, consoles, mobiles, handhelds, etc.).
- Maintain and operate systems and services associated with PG&E’s telecommunications infrastructure within FCC requirements.
- Provide 24/7 3rd tier support for PG&E’s radio infrastructure, technicians, and engineers throughout the PG&E system.
- Scheduled Network Changes/Maintenance: All changes to the network must be approved by Change Management. Change Management may request Specialist review of work request, (RFC/MOP), and give detailed analysis of the risk. May also be required to file RFC/MOP and scheduled maintenance or authorize, conduct, supervise, or monitor network maintenance activities in conjunction with internal 3rd parties.
- Work closely with other groups to identify and address potential problems in the transport network before they become service affecting events. Communicate all issues, changes, outages, and maintenance in accordance with processes, procedures, and polices.
- Performs the operation, management, and maintenance of the radio network and telecommunication systems, linked systems, and peripherals in order to enhance radio network operations.
- Cover various work assignments during a variety of work hours and participate in on-call rotation. Resolving system outages and meeting critical project timelines may include extended hours and work weeks to include weekends and holidays.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Open/Update/Close Network Trouble Tickets: Network alarms and maintenance are addressed and documented via trouble tickets with notifications and status updates issued to internal organizations and customers when applicable. Specialist creates, manage, and respond to system trouble tickets and report status updates to Leadership and customers.
- Alarm monitoring and Network Fault Management: The Telecom Control Center (TCC) actively monitors network equipment and facilities. To ensure prompt and correct response to alarms, Specialist support TCC operations by providing alarm analysis and resolution instructions.
- Unplanned Network Outage: Analyze events, alarms, historical logs to determine and manage service impacts of unplanned outages. Engage necessary departments and personnel in a timely manner for fault isolation and troubleshooting. Manage escalation and coordinate group efforts including 3rd party engagement and notification. Document event status and provide timely status updates.
- Continually look for opportunities to improve process, reduce cost, and increase efficiencies with in the 2-way radio systems.
- Ability to travel to remote locations and assist technicians in troubleshooting radio issues within the PG&E service territory.
Projects:
- Support PG&E Telecom Engineering Department, Product Specialist and Project Management in network construction activities: installation, commissioning and troubleshooting 2-way radio systems.
- Work closely with peers, supervisor, team members and others as needed to identify, plan, prioritize and implement complex project deliverables.
- Performs advanced testing and evaluations of new technologies in a lab environment. I.e., required patches to servers and to desktop operating systems, and effect on our console systems and programming applications.
Consulting:
- Evaluate and articulate market needs and opportunities for technology-based products and services.
- Provide advanced content-specific advice to technical architects and other IT professionals and stakeholders.
Training:
- Assist other specialists, analysts, and technicians as appropriate in developing their own technical skills through training, presentations, and involvement in the process of maintaining and supporting these systems (installations, upgrades, troubleshooting, problem resolution, etc.).
- Create and maintain training class curriculum, conduct internal classes and coordinate vendor training.
- Provide remote or on-site formal/technical/OJT training to peers, NOC teams, and or Region Operations Technicians and publish support bulletins/job aids. Mentor and cross-train other groups such as engineering and project management.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Associates Degree in Computer Science or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
- Experience in IT-Information Technology operations, 2 years
- ^Works in 24 hours per day-7 days per week environment
- Ability to travel using personal vehicle
Desired:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Business or related discipline or equivalent experience or technical training.
- 4 years of IT operations experience, radio operations, and IP network experience or equivalent.
- 5 or more year’s radio experience managing 2-way radio systems and equipment.
- Proficient in troubleshooting various types of 2-way radio equipment common to the Telecommunications industry and have understanding of common telecommunications standards and protocols.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as single line drawings, job packages, RFCs/MOPS, vendor documentation, ITU/IEEE telecommunication standards.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio.
- Understanding of Windows OS.
- Basic concepts IP Multicast.
- Able to work and communicate across multiple departments.
- Ability to research and survey new products and/or releases (e.g., 2-Way radio Technologies).
- Ability to establish and document operations procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated experience in Designing, Implementing, and troubleshooting radio systems in a Large Enterprise Environment.
- Experience in MPT 1327, TAIT radio products, Trunked radio systems.
