Department Overview

The workers of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.

The PG&E Repair Facility department provides tested and repaired Distribution Line Equipment and quality inspected and tested rubber protective equipment plus the evaluation and scrapping of used oil filled equipment. PG&E Repair Facility also dispatches Field Repair crews to assist Distribution Line crews with the trouble-shooting and repairs of Distribution Line equipment as well as Transmission/ Substation support.

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E.

The Traveling Utility Worker is an entry level position with advancement opportunities for motivated individuals who perform successfully. The individual will work under the general direction of a journey person or Shop Lead. Work is predominantly outdoors and in all weather conditions. The individual must be able to drive safely, work extended hours, travel upon request at any time, and wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $35.82 per hour.  This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.  

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance to journey person and or Shop Leader for scrapping/ repairing equipment and receiving/ evaluating equipment as needed
  • Handles components and equipment with oil that may contain PCB (Polychlorinated biphenyls)
  • Uses computer to receive and manage work assignments, data entry into RTS database, completion of training courses, manuals and technical information on websites; documents work summaries, communication, and coordination by use of email with supervisors and journeymen
  • Operates hand and foot controls of various types of heavy equipment, such as forklift, boom lift, pallet jacks, sweepers and gantry cranes for transport or placement of parts and supplies according to PG&E's safety standards and procedures
  • Communicates in person, by phone and by radio with supervisor, public, officials, general public and customers regarding identified problems and proposed solutions; communicates with site journeyman regarding job specifics and coordination of repair work
  • Meets with individual or groups for safety, departmental or trainings; attends and participates in meeting and training activities
  • Loads and unloads tools, equipment and materials from storage to vehicles or cart by hand or by use of a forklift; cleans and maintains tools and equipment; carries tools and equipment to work site and storage areas
  • Drives company utility bodied vehicle, pick-up truck, cars or vans to job sites; may drive in all traffic and weather conditions day or night

The work environment will vary and may include the following factors:

  • Exposure to sulfites, hydrazine, caustics, fuel oil, gasoline, cleaning solutions, various lubricants, PCB oil or other hazardous materials
  • Wearing of respirators, hardhats, safety glasses and other safety equipment
  • Working around poison oak, poison ivy, snakes, spiders, and insects
  • Exposure to oils and solvents
  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Ascending to and work from heights
  • Working from elevated positions while belted off for protection

The successful candidate will possess and continue to develop the following skills:

  • Develop computer skills
  • Learn and follow all safety regulations
  • Comprehend various types of equipment labels and safety signs
  • Communicate and receive information on the telephone
  • Understand instructions

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one by first day of employment
  • Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to work in all types of extreme temperature and weather conditions
  • Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds a minimum of one time a day

Desired:

  • Graduate of a trade school with an electrical or electronic training emphasis
  • Graduate of the PowerPathway® Program
  • Relevant Hiring Hall and/ or PG&E Experience
  • Experience with basic hand tools
  • Construction or maintenance experience in an electric utility, or equivalent commercial or industrial electrical experience (electrical emphasis)
  • Construction or maintenance experience in a utility, commercial or industrial environment with an non-electrical emphasis (e.g. phone, cable, civil construction, equipment operator)
  • Outdoor work experience
  • Electrical and/ or mechanical experience in the military
  • Candidates who live within 50 miles of headquarters will be given preference
