Job Category: Information Technology
Job Level: Manager/Principal
Business Unit: Information Technology
Work Type: Hybrid
Job Location: Oakland
Department Overview
PG&E's Data Analytics & Insights (DA&I) team builds and operates the data platform services that power decision-making across one of the largest energy companies in the U.S. Think of us as an internal data products company: we own the platforms, acquire the customers (business units), ship the products (datasets, analytics, insights), and measure the outcomes. We're scaling fast and need product leaders who think like owners.
Position Summary
DA&I is witnessing unprecedented demand for data services. We are seeking a Principal level Product Manager (PM) to support our growth. You’ll be accountable for a core data metric (enterprise data availability), a portfolio of customers (business units across the company), and the business outcomes DA&I’s products deliver for customers.
The Principal PM will serve equal functions in strategy, product management, and operations. You set the targets, build the roadmap, inform prioritization, and unblock delivery. You partner directly with customers to make sure what’s shipped actually moves their metrics and present results to senior leadership.
Principals regularly engage in ambiguous environments. They define high-level, move-forward strategies, but are equally responsible for diving into and auditing the details. You will create high-leverage, business artifacts (documents, presentations, analyses) that are reusable; you will use these artifacts to facilitate and drive alignment with leaders throughout PG&E. You must be proactive in identifying and documenting existing business process operations, and inventive in developing what a future and aspirational state can be. No task is beneath you.
What makes this role unique:
You own an enterprise-level KPI end-to-end — from defining how it's measured, to setting annual targets, to forecasting quarterly performance, to presenting results at executive operating reviews. This is your P&L equivalent: you're accountable for the number.
You drive customer outcomes, not just delivery — You don't hand off after launch. You define the value hypothesis upfront (what decision improves, for whom, measured how), track it through delivery, and report the business impact back to leadership.
You operate at the strategy-execution seam — You write the investment narratives that shape where the company puts its data dollars, and you help manage the ground-level backlog that makes it real.
This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and our Oakland, CA headquarters based on business needs.
Job Responsibilities
Principal Product Managers are owners. Accountable for complex scope, significant risk, and high impact. Work independently with limited guidance and regularly engage with Vice Presidents and Directors to influence decisions.
- Own the company's data availability metric. Design the methodology. Collaborate across teams to get input and buy-in. Set annual and quarterly targets. Build bottoms-up forecasts by customer and use case. Track actuals across platforms. Deliver exec-ready readouts. Author the strategic narratives that inform senior leadership investment decisions. Make the reporting audit-ready and defensible.
- Manage the Portfolio. Apply lean portfolio management in collaboration with DA&I team to prioritize across competing demands. Balance business outcomes against cost and risk to the enterprise. Maintain portfolio-level views (roadmaps, dashboards, investment narratives) and present to executive leadership. Shape the product strategy to align with the company's long-term plan.
- Drive Customer Outcomes. Partner with business leaders to scope use cases, define success criteria, and co-deliver measurable results (i.e. cost reduction, risk mitigation, and faster decisions, etc.). Build reusable frameworks so this scales beyond you.
- Run the Go-to-Market. Develop and execute the engagement strategy that drives adoption of enterprise data platforms. Identify key customers, sequence by readiness and value, author business cases, and manage the intake-to-adoption lifecycle. You're acquiring and retaining internal customers — similar muscle to external GTM.
- Align Teams. Participate in governance processes as defined by the organization. Lead cross-functional coordination with data management, architecture, and enterprise program teams. Build artifacts and drive alignment on standards, methodology, and platform scope. You're a key integrator across teams.

Demonstrated ability to partner with business stakeholders to co-define and co-deliver measurable value from data or technology products
Experience developing adoption or go-to-market strategies for internal technology or data platform programs
