Department Overview

The Artificial Intelligence and Analytics Insights (AIAI) organization partners closely with senior leaders and teams across PG&E to achieve breakthrough outcomes using data, analytics, and AI. Working in an enterprise Hub & Spoke model, AIAI focuses on the company’s highest‑priority challenges across the energy system, helping leaders improve decisions, performance, and execution while delivering clear benefits for customers, including affordability, reliability, and safety.

AIAI brings together data from across the company and applies advanced analytics, generative AI, and agentic AI to turn insight into action. As a center of excellence, the organization supports and connects data science and AI practitioners, sets clear standards, and builds shared tools so AI can be used responsibly and at scale. The team works on complex, high‑impact problems where AI drives step‑change improvements for customers and the business—not incremental gains.

Position Summary

The Senior Director, Artificial Intelligence is accountable for turning AI into measurable, breakthrough outcomes for PG&E and its customers. This role leads a team of data science and AI experts and partners deeply with senior leaders and functional teams across the company to identify, prioritize, and deliver high‑impact AI solutions across the energy system. The focus is on closing gaps on the company’s most important outcomes, with clear benefits for customers, including affordability, reliability, and safety.

This leader sets and delivers PG&E’s AI Transformation (AIX) strategy and roadmap, spanning advanced analytics, generative AI, and agentic AI. They are responsible for prioritizing AI use cases, aligning investments to enterprise strategy, and ensuring solutions move from pilots to scaled adoption. The role consolidates AI capabilities while establishing strong risk, governance, and operating standards consistent with PG&E’s performance playbook, ensuring AI is used responsibly and delivers sustained, real‑world value for customers and the business.

This position is hybrid and will need to work in the Oakland General Office(OGO) several times a week and or as business needs require.

Reporting

This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Chief Data and Analytics Officer and manages a team size of 30 individuals including two Directors

Job Responsibilities 

  • Team Leadership & Talent Development; Lead PG&E’s Applied AI team, including data scientists, ML engineers, and AI product managers. Foster a high-performance culture making full use of PG&E's performance playbook to produce predictable results; Deliver enterprise-wide AI literacy & upskilling initiatives.
  • Cross-Functional AI Integration; Partner with IT & functional area leaders to embed AI into enterprise workflows. Drive adoption of AI capabilities that improve system reliability, reduce operational costs, and enhance customer experience. Translate functional needs into scalable AI solutions and ensure alignment with PG&E’s transformation priorities.
  • Support for Major Programs; Collaborate with program leaders to integrate AI into PG&E’s major programs and transformation efforts. Ensure AI capabilities are leveraged to accelerate program outcomes, improve decision-making, and deliver customer value.
  • AI Strategy & Execution; Define and execute PG&E’s Applied AI roadmap, balancing quick wins with long-term platform investments. Prioritize use cases that deliver tangible customer benefits, especially in affordability and reliability.
  • AI Platform & Infrastructure; Build and scale AI platforms in cloud environments to support consistent development, deployment, and governance. Ensure robust model training, optimization, and integration with enterprise systems.
  • AI Governance & Risk Management; Partner with Legal, Risk, Privacy, and Cybersecurity to ensure compliance with PG&E’s Generative AI Acceptable Use Policy and broader regulatory obligations.
  • Ensure ethical, secure, and compliant AI practices: Implement governance frameworks that uphold data privacy, model transparency, and compliance with utility regulations and industry standards.

Background Qualifications

Minimum

  • Master’s degree in applied sciences, sustainability, econometrics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, data science, environmental engineering, electrical engineering or other applicable discipline OR equivalent experience
  • 12 years of relevant professional experience. (A relevant master’s degree can be substituted for two years of experience; a relevant PhD can be substituted for five years of experience)
  • Leadership experience, job related, 3 years

Desired

  • Data Science organization leadership, 5 years
  • Utility or Energy industry experience, electric or gas, or other job-related, 7 years
  • Experience in a leadership role, on complex, high risk projects in a matrixed environment
  • Experience leading strategic planning or other related efforts

Compensation

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. 

We estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed within the reasonable compensation range of $212,800-$305,900. The decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.  This leadership role is also eligible for an annual Short Term Incentive Plan (STIP) award, as well as the Long Term Incentive Plan (LTIP) grant.
