Department Overview
The Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Program is an integral part of Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Transmission and Substation Engineering Services Department. In partnership with the PG&E Learning Academy, the program provides comprehensive onboarding and training for entry-level engineers and ongoing professional development for transmission and substation engineering staff.
Transmission and Substation Engineering supports the company’s $1 billion capital investment in substation and transmission line projects. The department prepares detailed construction drawings and provides engineering expertise to upgrade, expand, and replace company infrastructure in the following areas:
- Distribution substations
- Transmission substations
- Transmission lines
- Technical support for feasibility studies
- Construction support
- Meaningful input for project evaluation and cross-checking.
Position Summary
Researches, designs, and develops technical, systems, and soft-skills curricula. Collaborates with partners to define training design, content, and delivery methods. Establishes learning objectives, course outlines, participant and facilitator materials, hands-on activities and environments, assessment structures, and safety and human performance tools. Reviews project documentation and conducts detailed task analyses based on the target audience, business processes, and systems. Facilitates meetings.
This hybrid position requires in-office attendance at the hiring leader’s discretion and approximately 10% travel within PG&E’s service territory.
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

Bay Area Maximum: $120,000
California Miniumum:$76,000
California Mid:$95,000
California Maximum:$114,000
This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct needs analyses and design curricula, training content, and materials using methods and tools that meet PG&E quality standards.
- Recommend learning solutions and estimate the required effort.
- Collaborate with project partners and stakeholders to develop learning solutions that support business goals and best practices.
- Facilitate content-development sessions with subject matter experts and stakeholders under the guidance of experienced learning professionals.
- Define metrics to measure training effectiveness and align results with business goals.
- Manage time and priorities, escalating challenges when appropriate.
- Partner with Substation and Transmission Line Engineering to define training design and content.
- Define learning objectives, course structure, content, and assessments.
- Analyze existing content and the tasks to be taught or supported for the target audience, business processes, and systems.
- Develop learner and facilitator presentations, guides, activities, scenarios, assessments, graphics, and interactions using company standards and templates. Write clear instructional and facilitator content tailored to the audience.
- This covers user manuals, job aids, and draft technical procedure documents to support the new tools or processes in preparation for training.
- Provide technical writing support to the transmission and substation engineering as needed.
- Lead in-person and virtual sessions with subject matter experts, including task analysis, alpha, beta, and answer-validation meetings.
- Coordinate ongoing content review and validation with subject matter experts and incorporate feedback. Independently manage assigned tasks, and deadlines, and proactively communicate issues and risks.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, liberal arts, a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- At least three years of experience in instructional design, communications, teaching, training, change management, or graphic design.
- Relevant professional experience is required.
Desired:
- Degree in engineering, computer science, learning design, or instructional technology preferred.
- At least three years of experience developing instructor-led, eLearning, or virtual courseware for substation and transmission engineering.
- Strong instructor-led training design skills, openness to feedback, and ability to adapt quickly.
- At least three years of experience developing training for the utility industry.
- At least three years of technical writing experience.
- Strong knowledge of adult learning theory and instructional design methods.
- Advanced knowledge of and proficiency in task analysis.
- Proficiency in PowerPoint and Word.
- At least three years of experience with Questionmark and Author-it.
- Ability to manage multiple development efforts simultaneously, as needed.
- Ability to contribute effectively to a high-performing team.
- Knowledge of safety practices and ability to incorporate PG&E’s safety culture into daily work.
